Honors Sections and Honors Seminars

There are two types of honors courses: Honors Sections and Honors Seminars.

HONORS SECTIONS

  • Honors Sections include the same material covered in regular sections of a course, but in greater depth, with opportunities for students to pursue individual interests.
  • For new students, eligibility is based on prior academic records, courses taken, grades, class standing and/or letters of recommendation.
  • For continuing MCC students, eligibility is based on completion of at least 12 credit hours, with a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 and/or recommendation by a professor. Students who meet this requirement will automatically be sent an honors application prior to class registration.

HONORS SEMINARS

  • Professors develop class topics pertinent to the current seminar themes. These topics are explored through extensive background readings, in-depth discussions, interpretive essays, oral presentations, research, and similar activities. MCC offers five Honors Seminars:

    • The Honors Seminar in Critical Analysis (IDC 195) provides an interdisciplinary examination of a selected theme that develops critical thinking, discussion leading and expository writing abilities.

    • The Honors Seminar in the Humanities (HMN 295) is an exploration of humanistic themes that draw upon the arts, literature, and ideas of selected periods and cultures.

    • The Honors Seminar in the Natural Sciences (SCI 295) is an examination of the major biological, chemical, geological and physical issues and processes related to human influence on the earth and its systems and functions.

    • The Honors Seminar in the Social and Behavioral Science (SBS 295) is a critical analysis of issues of human adaptation and growth, using social and behavioral science models and concepts.

    • The Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar (IDC 295) is an in-depth examination of a theme based on a multidisciplinary blend of related issues.
